Leadership Defined

Leaders are born. Leaders are made. Which is it? What is leadership? What does it mean to be a leader? You’ve read about it, heard about it, listened to Tony Robbins and a multitude of other “motivational” speakers tell you that you have what it takes to become one. But what does it really, truly mean to be a leader? If you look up “leadership” in the dictionary, you’ll find the following: “the position or function of a leader; the period during which a person occupies the position of leader; the ability to lead.” If you look up “leader” you will find the following: “a person or thing that leads; a guiding or directing head.” What do both of these definitions have in common? THEY DON’T TELL YOU HOW TO BE ONE!! We’ve tried to simplify leadership so that people can go beyond just an understanding of what it means, but have a plan to become one. At Apex, here’s the definition we teach to our clients; “When a person or group of people that you have influence over, be it direct or indirect, know in their heart that you BELIEVE in them exceedingly more than the end product or process they can produce. As a result of that belief, they are willing to take ACTION to make your vision their vision. Your goals their goals. Not out of coercion, but out of choice.” You may have to read that again to let it really sink in. When you begin to lead from this position, you will notice a tremendous change in how people react to you. Leaders are humble. Leaders are caring. True leaders inspire people to run through walls, face the largest of giants and believe in themselves far more than they ever dreamed possible on their own. Become a leader in 2011! In your job. In your family. In your community.
